There are a lot of excuses that people give for not working towards their goal. Their excuses are wide and varied, including:
- their situation
- their upbringing
- their job
- the economy
- their partner/boss/parents/kids/in-laws
This list of excuses is endless, but here’s the real truth: they’re afraid and scared.
Of course, everyone is afraid. You haven’t cornered the market of fear. Whether it’s the fear of failure or fear of the sheer hard work involved, everyone’s scared to a certain degree.
If the truth be told, I’m afraid of writing this book. After all, what will people say, and will they laugh at me if I don’t sell any copies? But actually, those things are superficial fears, and there are two things that are far deeper than the fear of failure:
- we’re afraid that we’ll have to change and
- we’re afraid that we might succeed
The first one is quite easy to understand. In order to accomplish the ‘thing’ it is that you want to accomplish will require you to change, and no one likes change. The very mention of the word can make us uncomfortable, since we are creatures of habit and even though we understand its importance, change does not come naturally to the majority of us.
Change means we have to look ourselves in the mirror and face some uncomfortable truths about ourselves. Maybe we’re lazy and we’re afraid to make more effort, maybe we blame others and change would mean that we have to accept responsibility, or maybe we’re with the wrong partner and change means that we have to be brave and tell them. Whatever it is that you’re afraid of, you have to overcome it, because that thing that you’re unwilling to change is holding you back from the true happiness that you crave.
The second deeper fear, the fear of success might sound a little crazy. But it’s true nonetheless.
In order to succeed, you’ll have to become the true person that you are capable of, that higher self. It means letting go of the person you are now and being mature enough to know there are no valid excuses. It means being brave enough to accept that the only thing stopping yourself is you.
We’re really not afraid of failure nearly as much as we are afraid of success because what happens next? If you succeed, what do you do after? Believe me, the thing that you want to succeed at today is merely a stepping stone to your next goal and next success – it’s called growth and it’s waiting for you once you overcome your initial fears.
