Before you can learn how to develop a growth mindset we have to understand what the difference is between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Fundamentally the teaching differences between a fixed and growth mindset isn’t something that is taught in schools. If anything, consciously or sub-consciously we are all taught to operate from a fixed mindset, whether that’s from school, our jobs or society in general.
Having a fixed mindset keeps people stuck in the same place, where as learning how to develop a growth mindset can help you break free.

Chapter 5: Fixed or growth mindset
The type of mindset you have will greatly affect what you can accomplish. Whether you see something as a ‘problem’ or an ‘opportunity’ will in turn colour your outlook on how you will enjoy or not enjoy your life. You can probably guess which one will give you a better life, so I’ll get right into telling you how to shift from a fixed mindset into a growth mindset.
When something unexpected and undesirable happens, how do you see it?
Do you think, ‘Oh no, I really don’t need this right now! I have never even done this before. I don’t know how to do it, and therefore I can’t do it’?
Have a think about the last time you heard one of these statements said by someone you know. Whether they realise it or not, by reacting in this way they are operating from a fixed mindset. Are they an impressive person, have they accomplished anything, and do you want to be like that person?
Okay, now think about yourself. You have goals, ambitions and dreams to live. Chances are the thing that you want to do is going to require hard work, resilience and stretching yourself – if it didn’t involve these things then it wouldn’t be much of a goal.
Keep your dream in mind. Most likely it will make you excited and fill you with hope and energy. Just thinking about achieving it should give you intense satisfaction and happiness.
But there’s that voice, the voice that says, ‘Huh, who are you kidding? You can’t do this! Who are you to think you can? There are too many things in your way, plus you don’t even have a clue how to do it.’
Don’t worry. You’re not alone; we all hear some variant of that voice. The common mistake is listening to it. Most people pay attention to that negative, inner voice and reason to themselves, ‘Yes, it’s true, I don’t know how to do this, I can’t do this, who was I kidding to think I ever could?’ and then they simply give up.
That is a fixed mindset and something that society has scripted us into from when we were young. When you said that you wanted to be a footballer and everyone laughed and told you that it was impossible or when everyone was waiting for you to fail so they could point out that ‘you couldn’t do it’, fixed mindsets were at play. When all you ever hear is, ‘No, you can’t do it,’ over time you start to believe what you’re being told. It’s a technique that was designed hundreds and hundreds of years ago to keep us in ‘our place’.
However, things are only true if you want them to be true, and if you want to change from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset then you can. In fact, it’s as easy as reading this line to yourself:
‘I can do it, because I can learn and adapt to achieve anything. I can. I will. I must.’
Suddenly that inner voice changes from, ‘You can’t do that,’ to ‘Okay, so what you need to do next is…’ and the growth mindset starts to plot every task out. It’s at this point that you realise there weren’t even that many tasks in your way and they certainly weren’t difficult. In fact, it’s going to be great fun finding ways to navigate past them!
Your life will start to improve from the very second you shift to a growth mindset. DO IT RIGHT NOW, it takes a single second.
